Minoru Omori was a Japanese journalist and historian who died in California in 2010 at age 88. He started his career as a staff reporter at the Mainichi Newspaper and became the head of the foreign news desk at age 40. He received prestigious awards including the UCLA Foreign Press Award and the Vaughn-Uyeda Prize. He left the Mainichi Newspaper after being criticized his articles on the Vietnam War by then US Ambassador to Japan, Edwin Reischauer, he became a freelance journalist. He started a quality weekly newspaper called "Tokyo Observer". He also initiated the ocean seminars, titled "the Pacific University", which gave over 3000 young Japanese a chance to visit the United States and Asian countries in the late 1960s. In 1980s and 1990s he served as a Regent's Professor at the University of California, Irvine. He is the author of more than 100 books in politics and history.
"Omori Minoru Monogatari (The story of Minoru Omori)" is a tribute to his memory, written by 73 people including journalists, a statesman, a religious leader, business people, friends, relatives and wife. I had the pleasure of participating in this project as one of four editorial members and a contributor. |
